So-called Black Hebrew Israelites (also called Black Hebrews, African Hebrew Israelites, and Hebrew Israelites) are groups of Black Americans who claim that they are descendants of the ancient Israelites.

What gives them this idea? Where’s the beef?

At the end of the 19th century, Frank Cherry and William Saunders Crowdy both claimed that African-Americans are descendants of the Hebrews in the Bible; Cherry established the Church of the Living God, the Pillar Ground of Truth for All Nations in 1886 and Crowdy founded the Church of God and Saints of Christ in 1896.

Consequently, Black Hebrew groups were founded in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, from Kansas to New York City, by both African-Americans and West Indian immigrants.

In the mid-1980s, the number of Black Hebrews in the United States was between 25,000 and 40,000. In the 1990s, the Alliance of Black Jews (which is no longer operating) estimated that there were 200,000 African-American Jews; this estimate was based on a 1990 survey conducted by the Council of Jewish Federations. The exact number of Black Hebrews within that surveyed group remains unspecified.

Traditionally, Black Christians in the United States have identified themselves spiritually with the Israelites. In the late 19th century, some of them also began to claim that they were the biological descendants of the Israelites.

This identification with the Israelites was a response to the sociopolitical realities of their situation in the United States, including slavery and racial discrimination. Democrats were so committed to keeping the black man down and locked in chains they eventually spun our country into a civil war. For African-Americans, appropriating Jewish history was part of a rebellion against the American racial hierarchy that deemed Africans inferior. It was also a means of fulfilling their desire to know their origins and regain their lost history.

These Black Hebrews adhere in varying degrees to the religious beliefs and practices of both Christianity and Judaism. With the exception of a small number of individuals who have formally converted to Judaism, they are not recognized as Jews by the greater Jewish community.

Many choose to identify themselves as Hebrew Israelites or Black Hebrews rather than Jews in order to indicate their claimed historic connections.

In other words, you can only be a Hebrew Israelite or Black Hebrew if you are of African or West Indian descent. White boys need not apply, nor Aramean for that matter.

So, a sect of black Americans suddenly began claiming they were descendants of the ancient Israelites mentioned in the Bible’s old testament based on absolutely no proof. And this was long before the days of DNA testing, which could have proved or disproved their claims.

There is one major issue they seem to have overlooked. To be a Jew, typically your mother must have been a Jew. Synagogues don’t recognize anyone as a “real Jew” without them either being raised a Jew by Jewish parents, by mitochondrial DNA (from your mother), or those who are willing to convert and conversion is a serious commitment. It’s a lot of hard-core study and takes discipline.

Having one’s mitochondrial DNA tested would now be one way to rectify this convoluted situation. DNA testing is available and Jews can be identified at 100% accuracy. I suggest the following. If these claimants have themselves tested, they could in short order learn the truth about the possibility of Jewish heritage.

Unfortunately, from my own observations, the so-called Black Hebrew Israelites of today show themselves to be a bunch of angry, loudmouth, unruly racists and bigots.

They dress in ridiculous garb that has no connection to ancient Jews. They flaunt the star of David. This Star, known in Hebrew as the Shield of David or Magen David, is a generally recognized symbol of modern Jewish identity and Judaism. Its shape is that of a hexagram, the compound of two equilateral triangles. Unlike the menorah, the Lion of Judah, the shofar and the lulav, the Star of David was never a uniquely Jewish symbol, although it had been used in that way as a printer’s colophon since the sixteenth century. Again, not something worn by ancient Jews.

One could ask here, if these people are descendants of the ancient Israelites, why would they place so much emphasis on the Star?

Just over the past few days, they have attended demonstrations where they called Donald Trump a homosexual and verbally attacked other groups. Central to their attacks was mention of race. They called a group of Catholic teenagers “dirty crackers,” a term every bit as abrasive as the word “nigger.”

Conversely, traditional Jews don’t behave in this animalistic manner. They strive to be the light unto nations. They are educated, kind, open-minded and wonderful folks who continue to make huge strides toward improving mankind.

The Black Hebrew Israelites lack any redeeming qualities as far as I can tell. They are thugs and racists for the most part. I lump them in with race baiters like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Obama’s Reverend “God Damn America” Wright.

As for me, I’m calling bull shit on them having any kind of connection to Jews. The sociopolitical realities which have demoralized American blacks is not remedied by false claims of being descended from ancient Israelites. Instead they demoralize themselves even further.

There is no beef.
