Democrats getting dizzy from Obama scandals
It isn’t entirely clear if the Democrats now distancing themselves from President Obama fully get why trading terrorists for a suspected deserter and the ongoing implosion of Obamacare are problems. But it is increasingly evident, given the [sic: glowing] blowback from the American people, that they understand that they are problems.
As Obama becomes more toxic, the pols and friendly media outlets that stuck their necks out for him over the past six very scandal-plagued years are edging away. With Obama’s self-inflicted Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl scandal on top of the latest Obamacare debacle — vast swathes of those who managed to enroll are quite possibly ineligible — you have to wonder …
Was former Press Secretary Jay Carney’s sudden resignation last Friday a sign that, even if no one else did, he knew bad news was coming down the PR pike?
It’s unclear why Team Obama thought the Bergdahl swap was going to be applauded by the American people, but it is very clear from Saturday’s Rose Garden presser they thought it would be. But only a few loyal Democrats and the Taliban — reportedly slaughtering goats in celebration — were applauding.
Monday, Hillary Clinton commended Obama for bringing Bergdahl home. Then yesterday, the line pushed by friendly news outlets was that Clinton as secretary of state wanted a much tougher deal, and had promised consultation with Congress. Apparently the Democrats’ 2016 front-runner, already sweating a Benghazi scandal that won’t go away, doesn’t want a Bergdahl problem.
Meanwhile, a key Obama ally in the Senate, Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein, now voicing “surprise and dismay” over the Bergdahl deal, also is not playing ball.
Obama-friendly outlets like the New York Daily News are openly turning on him, while all the New York Times could manage was a lame defense — it’s “murky” whether the 2009 search for Bergdahl can be directly linked to the deaths of six soldiers.
Add Bergdahl to the list of scandals that already had Democrats distancing themselves ahead of the fall’s midterm election, in which they fear losing the Senate. Obamacare topped that list even before news emerged yesterday that as many as 2 million enrollments are suspect. But there are so many others. The Veterans Administration, the IRS targeting of conservatives, the Fast and Furious guns-for-drug-gangs program, NSA spying, and the many, many foreign policy failures, from Libya, to Egypt, to Syria and the Ukraine.
America is finally hitting scandal fatigue, and the standoffish body language of top Democrats is a clear sign they get that. America’s liberal elite may not fully understand why any of those things are problems for voters. But it is increasingly clear they’ll get the message on Election Day when Americans go to the polls and say enough!
