Come with me, back to 1959-1960, when I was in college. I was given an opportunity to sneak a peek at Weimar (a name taken from the German governmental and cultural period between the end of World War I and the final conversion to Nazism) culture in America. Our college president bought in what he called the “avant-garde,” particularly in the arts, i.e., a glimpse of what art and thought would be like in the near future.
