Control the Environment to Control Humanity

There is nothing new about the idea of controlling the environment to control behavior. Pavlov used it on dogs. B. F. Skinner used it on birds. We use it on pets. Parents use it on children. Law enforcers use it on criminals. And we all establish suitable environments to fit the needs of our various activities. But one of the most chilling uses of environmental control is its use by dictators to keep their subjects in line, and in recent years by world shapers and managers to force all of us to conform to their visions and plans.

Even in this there is no originality. August Comte (1798-1857), the father of sociology advised his followers to make the environment a religious principle among those to be controlled. In the second volume of his System of Positive Polity he wrote:

Green Myths: Enviro Facts that Aren’t

AS we mark the 38th Earth Day tomorrow, it’s worth noting that this secular “religion” has led many Americans to fervently believe some things that just aren’t true.

Environmentalist values plainly deserve a place in making public policy. But we shouldn’t be guided by myths that are provably false.

Yet a recent survey by Zogby International for the Manhattan Institute found that, when it comes to energy and the environment, the public is more inclined to believe myths than to have a firm grasp of basic facts.

No matter how much liberals try to dress up their nutty superstitions about global warming as “science,” which only six-fingered lunatics could doubt, scratch a global warming “scientist” and you get a religious fanatic.

These days, new religions are barely up and running before they seize upon the worst aspects of the God-based religions.

First, there’s the hypocrisy and corruption. At the 1992 Democratic Convention in New York, Al Gore said: “The central organizing principle of governments everywhere must be the environment.” The environment would not, however, be the central organizing principle of Gore’s own life.

The only place Al Gore conserves energy these days is on the treadmill. I don’t want to suggest that Al’s getting big, but the last time I saw him on TV I thought, “That reminds me — we have to do something about saving the polar bears.”
