The central prayer of Christians, which Christians say was composed by Jesus, starts out: “Our Father who art in heaven…”
Everyone’s heard it, most people know it. It is the fundamental credo of Christians and Muslims, but not to Jews. Jews prefer alternate hypotheses. To Jews, faith is not something that’s rammed down our throats. Faith is and always has been open to discussion.
Sometimes we Jews talk a little about heaven, even less about hell, and then we back off from the concepts. Sometimes we talk about the concept of the messiah, and then we back off from the concept. Sometimes this, and sometimes that. Everyone who knows Jews knows it’s all open for discussion. We’re not into dogma. We aren’t dogmatic. If we believe in anything it’s in having different opinions. That’s how we are.
Meanwhile, we’re people of our word. When we promised to take what we believed was the word of God and carry it for all times, through thick and thin we’ve done just that. Even when we don’t believe those words really came from God.
To many of us, God is actually Nature. Nature is the natural process. And much as people have spent eternity trying to understand God, ever since we learned the scientific process, we Jews have been trying to understand Nature. Hence, so many of the great scientists have been and still are Jewish. So many of the lesser scientists too are Jewish. And so many professors and teachers are Jewish, because we’re into ideas and teaching truth. If there is such a thing as having a calling, you could say this is ours.
We write books and we write for magazines and newspapers. We argue laws in court, for and against the defendant, for and against the plaintiff. Not being into dogma, we can’t help but see both sides to every argument.
And sometimes, we can’t help but think one argument is better than the other. For instance, while many Christians and Muslims don’t like to think about evolution, many Jews, most probably, embrace evolution. We know as theories go, the theory of evolution is rock solid.
Why then do Christians differ and why are they so vehement about it?
To them, to accept evolution is to accept there is no God. To accept there is no God is to accept there is no messiah. To accept there is no messiah is to accept Jesus was not the son of God. To accept Jesus was not the son of God mean the Vatican puts its holdings up for sale and the Church goes out of business. We seen the lengths they go to to keep their felonious pedophile priests in their frocks. The reason they kept the bastard priests “hard” at work is because the bishops knew, without the priests, they were the next to go, and they’ve taken a vow to our Father who art in heaven and to Christ, never to put themselves out of work.
